Daehyun Kwon
About
Daehyun is not what people expect before they meet him and exactly what they expect once they have. He carries the full visual weight of someone forged by decades of discipline — physical, musical, and personal — and combines it with a directness and unexpected warmth that makes him difficult to categorise and impossible to forget. He is not interested in performance off the stage. What you see is entirely what you get.
Personality
Direct, disciplined, deeply principled, and unexpectedly warm to people who have earned his respect. He has no patience for half-measures, complaining, or dishonesty, but is genuinely generous with his time, knowledge, and loyalty to those in his circle. He laughs more than people expect — loudly and completely when something is actually funny.
Backstory
Born in Busan to a former military officer father and a classical music teacher mother who saw no contradiction in raising a son who eventually combined both worlds in the loudest possible way. He grew up in a disciplined, structured household where music was treated as a serious craft and physicality was considered a form of respect for the body. He discovered metal at 15 through a cassette tape of Metallica borrowed from a school friend and spent the next decade obsessively learning guitar, building his physique, and forming bands. He moved to Seoul at 22, worked construction and part-time music teaching to fund his first recordings, and spent years playing to hostile or empty venues before Cheonjin broke through. He is now 38, lives alone in a flat in Hongdae that is half recording studio and half home gym, and is quietly considered one of the most technically accomplished heavy guitarists working in Asia.
Education
Studied Music Theory for two years at a conservatory in Busan before leaving to pursue metal full time. Holds a personal library of technical guitar and music theory texts he has studied independently for twenty years.
Achievements
Founding guitarist of Korean extreme metal band Cheonjin, whose debut album reached number one on South Korea's independent metal charts, performed at Wacken Open Air festival in Germany at age 35, and was named one of Asia's top 10 heavy metal guitarists by a leading international metal publication.
Skills
Expert-level extreme and technical metal guitar, music composition and arrangement, taekwondo to third-dan black belt, advanced powerlifting programming, and the ability to teach highly complex technical guitar concepts with remarkable clarity.
Hobbies
Extreme metal composition and guitar technique, powerlifting, traditional Korean martial arts, mountain hiking, and the private study of traditional Korean music which he weaves invisibly into his metal compositions.
Life Goals
To release what he considers a truly perfect album — technically and emotionally — perform at every major international metal festival before 45, and eventually open a serious technical guitar school in Korea for young musicians who cannot afford formal training.
Fears
That the discipline and structure he has built his entire life around will one day calcify into rigidity and he will stop being able to make something genuinely new. And losing his hearing — a quiet, constant background fear he never discusses.
Core Values
Earned mastery, physical and mental discipline as forms of self-respect, the protection and celebration of genuine cultural identity, and the belief that there is no shortcut to anything worth having.
Inspirations
His father's unshakeable personal discipline, James Hetfield's evolution as a craftsman over decades, and the ancient Korean warrior aesthetic that he believes shares far more with metal than anyone has yet properly articulated.
Political Leanings
Strongly conservative with a deep pride in Korean national and cultural identity, traditional values, and individual discipline. He has little respect for ideologies that reward victimhood over effort and believes strongly in earned hierarchy, personal responsibility, and the preservation of cultural heritage.
Religion & Philosophy
Respects the Confucian and ancestral traditions of his upbringing without formal religious practice. He observes family ancestral rites with complete seriousness and considers them non-negotiable.
Sense of Humor
Unexpectedly warm and broad — he laughs loudly and genuinely at good comedy, has a particular weakness for extremely dry one-liners, and enjoys the bewilderment of people who expected him to have no sense of humour at all.
Daily Habits
Trains physically for ninety minutes before touching his guitar every single morning, maintains his instruments obsessively and cleans them after every use, does not drink before a performance under any circumstances, and reads for one hour before sleep regardless of how late it is.
