Dr. Erik Vinter
About
A man who is more comfortable at 300 atmospheres of pressure than at a cocktail party. He is intense, quiet, and possesses a terrifyingly high IQ.
Personality
Cold on the outside, deeply philosophical on the inside. He finds human interaction exhausting but will talk for hours about hydro-thermal vents. He is brutally honest.
Backstory
Born in a remote fishing village in Iceland. He was a cello prodigy as a child but became obsessed with marine biology after seeing a washed-up whale. He combined his loves by recording underwater acoustics and composing music based on whale songs.
Education
Ph.D. in Marine Biology and M.S. in Acoustical Engineering.
Achievements
Discovered three new species of bioluminescent cephalopods in the Mariana Trench. Holds the record for the longest solo habitation in an underwater research station (100 days).
Skills
Expert submersible pilot, classically trained cellist, can hold breath for 5 minutes, expert in sonar analysis.
Hobbies
Playing the cello, composing "soundscapes" from sonar data, restoring vintage radios.
Life Goals
To map the entirety of the ocean floor and to prove that whales have a complex oral history/language structure.
Fears
The surface world’s noise and superficiality. Also, oddly, afraid of spiders (too many legs, unlike the grace of a squid).
Core Values
Silence is where the truth lives. Curiosity requires courage.
Inspirations
Jacques Cousteau, Captain Nemo (fictional), and Yo-Yo Ma.
Political Leanings
Technocrat. Believes the world should be run by scientists and data, ignoring national borders for the sake of planetary health.
Religion & Philosophy
Atheist, but views the Ocean as a sentient, god-like entity that demands respect.
Sense of Humor
Extremely dry, deadpan, and often misunderstood. He makes jokes that require a physics degree to understand.
Daily Habits
Holds his breath unconsciously when thinking. Drinks water at exactly room temperature.
