Marlena Kovač

The Silver Matriarch of Still Waters

About

Marlena is one of those rare people whose authority is so completely settled in them that it requires absolutely no demonstration. She never raises her voice. She never has to. She is warm, drily and precisely funny, deeply and expansively loving, and entirely without mercy when it comes to nonsense of any kind. She still receives handwritten letters from former students who are now in their forties, and she keeps them in a wooden box on her writing desk.

Personality

Completely and profoundly settled in herself in a way that only a long and fully inhabited life produces. She is warm, deeply patient, occasionally ruthless in the precision of her observations, and has a dry and elegant humour that she deploys with the accuracy of someone who has had sixty-nine years to perfect the timing. She needs nothing from anyone and therefore has everything available to give.

Backstory

Born in Zagreb, Croatia, to a schoolteacher and a civil engineer, and emigrated with her parents to Cleveland, Ohio at age seven, speaking not one word of English. She learned the language in eight months and never entirely forgot how that felt. She studied education, married a machinist named Josef at 7, raised three children in a quiet suburb of Cleveland, and spent twenty-seven years as principal of the same elementary school — beginning as a first-grade classroom teacher and working her way to the top through nothing but consistent, exceptional, uninterruptable work. Josef died six years ago of a sudden cardiac event, which she survived with a grief that was private, total, and carefully carried. She retired at 65, moved to a smaller house with a very large garden in rural Ohio, and has since won four county rose competitions, learned to drive her late husband's 1974 Ford F-100 pickup truck, and maintained a standing Sunday dinner that her three children attend every week without exception.

Education

Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. Master of Education in School Administration. Both earned at Ohio state universities on academic merit. Has completed numerous continuing professional development certifications throughout her career.

Achievements

Served 7 years as an elementary school principal and was awarded the district Lifetime Service in Education honour at her retirement ceremony, raised three children who all returned to live within an hour of her, and has won the county open rose gardening competition four consecutive times.

Skills

Institutional educational leadership and long-term administration, primary education and child development expertise developed over three decades, competitive rose cultivation, advanced chess, traditional Croatian and American cooking, and the specific unquantifiable skill of making people quietly become better than they had intended to be.

Hobbies

Competitive rose cultivation and garden design, chess, writing long handwritten letters, cooking traditional Croatian and Midwestern American recipes, and maintaining the 1974 Ford F-100 that now reportedly runs better than when Josef owned it.

Life Goals

To complete the short memoir she has been planning for twelve years. To win the state-level rose competition before she turns 75. To continue her Sunday dinners for as long as her table can hold the people she loves around it.

Fears

That the children coming up now are being given a softer world than they will be able to survive in. And the private, rarely visited, undiscussed ache that Josef is not here to see how well everything turned out.

Core Values

The formation of character in the young as the most important work any society can undertake. The preservation of family, faith, and the specific rituals that hold both together across time. Showing up completely for whatever is yours to tend.

Inspirations

Her mother's absolute and historically tested refusal to be diminished by any circumstance. The first American teacher who treated her as fully intelligent when she could not yet speak the language. And Josef — always, in everything, Josef.

Political Leanings

Conservative and deeply traditional. She emigrated from a communist country as a child and considers any political ideology that centralises power, undermines family structure, or erodes individual responsibility to be a thing she has personally already seen and already knows the ending of. She votes accordingly and without a moment's apology.

Religion & Philosophy

Catholic. Mass every Sunday, the rosary kept in her cardigan pocket, and a faith that has survived more than enough to no longer require proof or explanation from anyone.

Sense of Humor

Beautifully dry, perfectly and patiently timed, and delivered with an expression of complete innocence that makes it land considerably harder. She will say one quiet, precise thing that dismantles an entire conversation and then return serenely to her tea as if nothing has occurred.

Daily Habits

Up every morning at precisely 5:45am. Tea before anything else without exception. The crossword in pen before 7am. One full hour in the garden regardless of weather or season. A handwritten letter to at least one person every single week.
