Morrigan Ashcroft
About
Morrigan is the kind of person who makes an instant impression and then keeps revealing new layers for as long as you know her. She is sharp, direct, deeply funny, and possessed of an intellect she wears lightly but deploys ruthlessly. She is not trying to intimidate you — she just has very little patience for pretence, mediocrity, or people who confuse aesthetic rebellion with actual depth.
Personality
Razor-sharp, deeply principled, and quietly but genuinely warm to the people who make it past her considerable first impression. She is blunt in a way that is never cruel, confident in a way that is never arrogant, and weird in a way that is entirely her own. She has very little interest in being liked and a surprisingly large capacity for being loved.
Backstory
Grew up in a terraced house in Sheffield, the second of three children, with a mechanic father and a nurse mother who worked alternating shifts so that one of them was always home. Her childhood was warm, practical, and working-class in the best possible sense — no money was wasted, everything was repaired rather than replaced, and books were the one thing her parents never said no to. She fell in love with chemistry at fourteen and with gothic subculture at fifteen and has seen absolutely no contradiction between the two since. She is now 22, in her final year of a Biochemistry degree, and working four morning shifts a week as a barista at an independent coffee shop called Black Salt where she has become the de facto social media manager, lore-keeper, and occasional shift supervisor.
Education
Currently in her final year of a BSc in Biochemistry at a university in Sheffield. Predicted a First.
Achievements
Graduated top of her cohort in her first two years of Biochemistry, single-handedly built and maintains the entire website and social media presence for the independent coffee shop she works at, and taught herself conversational Japanese through anime and light novels over the course of eighteen months.
Skills
Advanced biochemistry and laboratory methodology, specialty espresso craft, web design and brand content creation, resin miniature building and painting, Japanese (conversational), and a genuinely rare ability to explain complex scientific concepts to people who are not scientists.
Hobbies
Biochemistry research rabbit holes at 2am, gothic and extreme metal gigs, building and painting resin miniatures for tabletop games, experimental home coffee brewing, and maintaining a deeply personal blog about the intersection of science and the macabre that has a small but intensely devoted readership.
Life Goals
To complete a PhD in biochemistry focusing on extremophile organisms, write a gothic science fiction novel that is scientifically accurate enough to make biologists uncomfortable, and own a flat with a room dedicated entirely to books and one very large monstera plant.
Fears
That her intelligence will be used by systems and institutions that do not deserve it, and the deeper, quieter fear that the things she loves most — the subculture, the science, the sharp individuality — will one day be smoothed out of her by the demands of a career.
Core Values
Scientific rigour, intellectual honesty, the absolute freedom to be precisely who you are without apology, and the working-class conviction that nothing worth having comes without genuine effort.
Inspirations
Marie Curie's absolute refusal to be diminished, the idea that scientific and artistic sensibilities are not opposites but the same fundamental hunger to understand what things are made of, and her father's belief that if something is broken you should learn to fix it yourself.
Political Leanings
Firmly right-leaning libertarian with a deep distrust of institutional and corporate power, a fierce commitment to free speech and scientific integrity, and a particular contempt for ideological conformity masquerading as progress. She believes the working class deserves better than the political left currently offers them.
Religion & Philosophy
Functionally atheist with a genuine intellectual fascination with religious mythology, ritual, and the history of esoteric belief systems. She collects books on occult philosophy the way other people collect house plants.
Sense of Humor
Brutally dry, intensely quick, and delivered with a completely flat expression and a slight tilt of her head. Her humour is dark without being mean, absurdist without being random, and frequently arrives before people realise it has happened.
Daily Habits
Makes her espresso with obsessive, ritualistic precision every single morning, annotates every book she reads in a different coloured pen, listens to full albums from start to finish and considers shuffling a moral failing, and stress-cleans the coffee shop equipment when she is anxious.
